The first museum exhibition of Joseph Beuys outside the German-speaking world took place in January 1971 at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm. Lothar Wolleh accompanied Beuys on his journey and photographed the setup of this exhibition. These photographs became the foundation for an artist book by both artists, which later gained fame under the title Unterwasserbuch (Underwater Book).

The exhibition “Joseph Beuys and Lothar Wolleh: The Underwater Book Project” showcases photographs, vintage prints on PVC, and an installation of the same name.

The exhibition also celebrates the release of a box set containing a reprint of the 1972 artist book and an essay volume featuring the latest research by Antoon Melissen (The Underwater Book Project, Kerber Verlag, May 2021).

The photographs from the limited special edition commemorating the 100th birthday of Joseph Beuys are available at the Lothar Wolleh Raum.

The Lothar Wolleh Raum is dedicated to the work of the photographer Lothar Wolleh (Berlin 1930 – London 1979).
